Happy Fall Everyone!
It's time for cooler weather, sweaters, first hot chocolates of the year(!), reading good books, and an overall slower season of life for us! We have been able to cross some things off of our family "To-Do" list, which has been nice, like cutting down the trees in our backyard that shade our pool.

We have been able to get one of our attic's cleaned which feels really good. We had a lot of material up there which we were saving just in case we felt like making quilts or things, but we finally went through it all and narrowed it down from about nine big storage bins to four!

Our fall garden got planted this past week....in pots! Our garden spot wasn't ready, and the only things that we wanted to plant were broccoli and cabbage, so we are trying it in pots. We will see how that works out; so far, so good!

We don't ever seem to have time in the spring to do a good spring cleaning due to our busy kidding season, so we did some thorough "Fall Cleaning" this past week.

This Fall's Herb Faire was a success at the end of September. It truly was a lovely day for the festival!

Working with Mist, our new Border Collie, has proven to be quite rewarding! She is picking things up very quickly and in one month I can already rely on her to get the goats in their pen with me without having to remind her exactly what she's supposed to be doing. She is so smart! What did we ever do without her???
It's also that time of year that Dad's pool and pond customers are wanting their pools closed up, so we have been doing a few of those each week as well as cleaning out a few ponds already this fall.

With the arrival of the cooler weather, we have been able to keep our windows open during the day (yippee!) and most nights as well. It's been nice to be able to hear the quiet chirping of the crickets, the beautiful calls of the birds, (I especially love it when the whippoorwills come out), and the howling of the coyotes in the not-too-distant woods.

So,...what is your favorite part of autumn?
"To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven..."

Sounds like you all have gotten lots of fall chores done! That is always a nice feeling to have things cleaned up before winter arrives.
ReplyDeleteShow a picture of your potted broccoli sometime, if it turns out well. Our fall garden currently includes turnip greens, peas, radishes, and lettuces. I am glad for a slower season now, and we've enjoyed having our windows open, too! Sarah and I might try camping out in the backyard sometime soon. ;) We also enjoy the tradition of going on a fall vacation somewhere as a family, and being out in the fresh air and colorful leaves, especially in the mountains.
You all have been busy. We're doing yard work and decorating. I love to put out lots of autumn decorations and enjoy the beautiful colors of fall.

Fall garden, now that's something we're totally unfamiliar with! Don't even ask how our summer garden did, suffice to say we didn't manage to harvest much, it was too cool for too long and not even our tomatoes did well. And, to add insult to injury, we ended up with gazillions of squash bugs on our pumpkins, something we've never had before, and they decimated our pumpkin plants! Jordan says once you have them, you can never get rid of them. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteIt's really too bad you got all that work done though. You should have saved it all for Caleb's visit, I'm sure he'd have been thrilled to spend his week off the farm working for you all. So make sure you get him up good and early each morning to milk, ok? We don't want him forgetting how to do it!
Love you all!
That was actually me, Deb, I'm too lazy to go change it now. Bethany would have posted, but she's too busy doing Caleb's work. ;-)
